When his niece is left an orphan, but with a dowry of 100,000 pounds, a stingy businessman persuades his partner to marry her, in order to earn half of it himself. After her father's death, Pagona (or Peggy), the daughter of an expatriate living in Australia, moves in with her uncle, Dionysis Katifes. Her late father had entrusted Dionysis with the administration of his fortune, consisting of 100,000 pounds, until his daughter marries. However, Dionysis, intending to keep the money for himself, conspires with his partner Frixos to marry her. Meanwhile, an impoverished geology professor, Kleomenis, and one of Dionysis' employees, Chronis, also have marriage plans in mind. Peggy, suspecting their true intentions, pretends to go bankrupt in order to determine which of the suitors is after her money and not her love.
