Looking for work as a violinist, Josef comes into the orbit of a rich young woman. She introduces him to a hedonistic existence free from religious intolerance. Josef gets an incredible commission: to write an opera for the San Carlo. 18th century: The young Czech Josef Myslivecek was supposed to follow in his father's footsteps and become a miller. But at the age of 26, he tried his luck as a composer in Italy. He wanted to become famous and write operas. Although he succeeded in studying with the renowned Italian composer Giovanni Battista Pescetti, success was a long time coming. The young musician was forced to live from hand to mouth and could only keep his head above water by working as a music teacher. Until, through a case of mistaken identity, he met a wealthy noblewoman. With her help and her network, he is able to present his compositions to influential men and thus gets the chance to compose and perform his first opera. The young king is very impressed by the opera performance - it is Josef Myslivecek's breakthrough and he quickly becomes one of the most sought-after composers of his time. Because of his origins, he is called "Il boemo" - the Bohemian. During these years, he travels extensively and also befriends the young Mozart. But Josef Myslivecek can only enjoy his fame for a short time, as he soon falls seriously ill, marking the beginning of his decline. —Arte The film begins with Myslivecek (Vojtech Dyk) at the end of his life, in dire straits and wearing a mask to conceal the ravages of tertiary syphilis that have destroyed his face. The film then flashes back to outset of his musical career as a young man in Venice. The son of a Prague miller, who expected him to follow in his footsteps, Myslivecek realizes his dream of becoming a famous composer in Italy, known as Il Boemo (the Bohemian, i.e. Czech), as his talent and quiet charisma bring him to the attention of a series of wealthy and royal patrons. In 1770 he meets the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Bologna. During the 1770s, he is at his most prolific, composing numerous works in the genre of Italian opera seria. Even as his illness begins to destroy his body and his face, his career reaches its pinnacle with the 1778 premiere in Naples of his opera L'Olimpiade.
