About Face
Three friends enter military school together, but 2 of them don't know that the 3rd one is secretly married. Biff Roberts, Tony Williams and Dave Crouse are upper classmen at Southern Military Institute (fictional school based on real school---Virginia Military Institute---in original play and film), and just three months away from graduating as commissioned officers in the U.S. Army. Williams and Crouse have girl problems while Roberts, the star pitcher on the school's baseball team, has a different sort of problem, as he is secretly married and his co-ed wife is expecting a child. The other two also have the problem of keeping Roberts in school long enough to graduate and, more importantly, pitch in the BIG GAME of the year, all wrapped around seven musical numbers. —Les Adams <longhorn1939@suddenlink.net> In early spring, three young woman are on the train to Pleasantville, heading "home" for the weekend coinciding with the big baseball game between the visiting North Carolina Tarheels and the home team representing the Southern Military Institute (SMI). Two of them are already involved with SMI upperclassmen cadets, who will be graduating at the end of the term. Lorna Carter, at the behest of her mother, is officially being hosted by Hal Carlton, but would much rather spend time with Tony Williams, who is always getting into trouble both with his classmates like Hal, and with the officers. Alice Wheatley is planning on spending time with Boff Roberts, the star pitcher, although she has caught the eye of Lt. Jones who will do whatever to thwart Boff from spending time with her. What Boff and Alice have not told anyone is that they secretly married in the fall, an offense that could get Boff expelled. They may not be able to hide that fact with further news that she has for him. And Betty Long is coming to this home for the first time in she being the daughter of SMI's newly appointed commandant, Col. Long. At Col. Long's previous appointments, pretty Betty always lamented that she didn't know whether cadets were interested in her because of her or to make it good with her father. As such, she convinces her father to allow her to be incognito as Betty Short so that she won't have the pressure of being "the colonel's daughter" in the eyes of the cadets. The one cadet with who she makes a connection is Tony and Boff's upperclassman friend Dave Crouse, who has no idea that anything he says to her about the tyrant colonel is to the tyrant's daughter. These romantic entanglements threaten each of Tony, Boff and Dave making it at SMI to graduation. —Huggo
