Rhoda Williams (Marling), an astrophysics student just accepted to study at MIT, is driving after drinking at a congratulatory party when she hits a minivan and kills all the members of a family except the father. She is imprisoned for four years, and upon release seeks out the widower, composer John Burroughs (Mapother). Burroughs does not know Rhoda's name or what she looks like. Initially, she intends to apologize for what happened, but ends up being hired by Burroughs as an assistant, slowly getting to know Burroughs and falling in love with him without being able to confess who she actually is.
