The film opens and closes with a French family arriving by boat at a rented cabin for the summer. They seem happy with the mother affectionately holding Antoine, a curious 13-year-old boy who has a pronounced curiosity. After arrival, we soon learned that this film takes place in Canada and the family is French Canadian. We quickly learn that Antoine is a voyeur, and it's through his eyes that we see the movie. There is a cabin next door where Genevieve, an old friend of Antoine's father, and her daughter, Anna, live. So the movie starts in the usual manner. Antoine first spots a two-piece swimsuit on a clothes line. Later, he spots Anna wearing the sui,t lounging in her yard. He doesn't approach but merely spies. Once he meets her, Anna asks him why he spied on her. He doesn't answer but she doesn't seem upset by him. It is here we find out Anna is entering University that fall, while Antoine is only 13. The two families have lunch. At lunch, Anna is the perfectly brought-up girl, polite and charming. His Dad, on the other hand, makes a fool of himself. He takes a deep interest in Genevieve. His wife doesn't seem to mind. Antoine observes it all. Later, Antoine leaves the house, telling his mother that Anna has invited him over to watch movies. However, when he arrives, Genevieve is gone, and Anna is entertaining two teenage boys. He seems disappointed but takes a seat and stares at the three older teenagers. They are drinking orange juice with vodka and passing a joint. Anna settles onto a couch with her boyfriend. Later, the other boy comes along and reclines as well. He is physically affectionate towards Anna, which neither she nor her boyfriend seems to mind. Later, the four of them make their way to the lake, where they strip to their underwear and swim. Anna plays with the two boys but ends up lying on her back with her head on Antoine's legs. Antoine arrives home early the next morning. His mother is upset with him being out all night. His father takes a more guy attitude, assuming that it's part of a male rite of passage. Antoine then has no contact with Anna for an extended period of time in the film. You see him studying and doing other mundane things. He is always the voyeur sneaking around observing things, even to the point of going to Anna's cabin during the day and standing on a box and looking into the cabin, observing the photos on the wall. The next time he spies on Anna, she is breaking up with her boyfriend loudly in front of Antoine's cabin. We are now approaching the pivotal part of the story. Genevieve asks his Dad to read a play that she's up for, and he agrees to go into her cabin with her to do so. Later, Antoine walks into Anna's cabin to find her arguing with her mother because she doesn't have a way to go into town to shop. The boat's motor needs repair. He takes Anna to his Dad, and Mom asks if they could take Anna into town. The Dad agrees, but the Mom says no to Antoine going along. They are going all day, returning with two bags of shopping, acting very companionable. The next day, Antoine spies Anna dressed nicely, leaving her cabin. He follows. She walks a long way, eventually going into the woods. Antoine loses sight of her but hears voices, a man and Anna's. Walking through very tall grass, he finally spots Anna, and she is with his father. At first, the meeting is tentative and confusing, then his Dad grabs Anna and tries to kiss her. Anna pushes him away but goes to her knees and pulls his father's slacks down in order to perform a sex act on him, which she does. Soon, both are naked and on the ground, where his Dad has sex with Anna. Antoine sees it all, and the scene is fairly explicit,t but the distance obscures some of the detail. But it's clear that Antoine sees his father having sex with Anna and cheating on his mother. Antoine is devastated by this event. He is unable to tell anyone what happened. The five share a meal again: Antoine, Anna, Genevieve, Dad, and Mom. During the dinner table talk, his mother tells everyone about her love for her husband. The father chimes I,n agreeing he only loves his wife. This upsets Anna, who suddenly leaves the table. Antoine is also upset and leaves the table. The adults are puzzled. Later, Antoine sneaks into his cabin and overhears his father on the phone with Anna. He breaks up with her and its seems she is upset. Then, with Antoine on the roof of the house, Anna comes to the cabin and confronts the father. It escalates so that the father has to physically remove Anna from the cabin and they fight in the yard in front of Antoine. Anna finally storms off as the mother arrives. The father placates the mother and gets things settled down. Breathing a sigh of relief the father starts back inside but spots Antoine of the roof. His face is a mask of terror. Later the father comes into Antoine's room to explain about Anna's conduct. He does not know that his son has witnessed them having sex in the woods. He tells his son that Anna is an emotionally troubled girl. Antoine does not confront his father on what he has seen. Later we see Anna's former boyfriend talking to Antoine's mother. She slaps him and then walks away distraught. Antoine watches as she confronts his father about Anna. Apparently, in anger Anna has told people about her affair with the father. Antoine takes it in. Later Anna bursts out of her cabin and fast-walks in the direction of the lake. Antoine follows her. She throws herself into the lake. Antoine rescues her and she ends up laying in seaweed on the lakes edge. The next scene mirrors the opening scene with the family making its way to the dock. Antoine sees Anna one final time standing in her cabin watching them go. The positions in the boat on the return trip are the same as the opening: the father in the stern guiding the out board with the mother and the together in the middle of the boat. This time they are not cuddling and when the mother touches Antoine he pulls away.
