Dishonorable
Two months after retrieving the key to the source code for the malevolent artificial intelligence known as the Entity, rogue IMF agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) receives a message from US President Erika Sloane (Angela Bassett). She informs Ethan that the Entity continues to seize control of global nuclear systems, aided by undercover doomsday cultists. The Entity has the ability to reshape all digital information, thereby distorting truth itself, turning allies against each other and increasing the risk of a global nuclear conflict. Erika says that the existence of the world depends on finding the source code to the Entity. Gabriel was Entity's liaison in the physical world. Paris was Gabriel's accomplice and is in Austrian custody. Ethan has refused to give the key to his government as anyone could use it for their own selfish ends. Ethan wants to kill the entity, but Erika says that this would wipe out the whole cyber space, plunging the world into an endless war. Ethan is ordered to surrender the key, but he refuses and continues pursuing Gabriel (Esai Morales), the Entity's former proxy, who was forsaken after failing to steal the key himself. Ethan and fellow IMF agent Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) first visit their ill IMF hacker Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) in his off-grid lab beneath London, where he has finished developing the "Poison Pill" malware that can target the Entity. The team recruits Jasper Briggs's (Shea Whigham) (A US Intelligence agent assigned to track down Ethan and his team) partner, Theo Degas (Greg Tarzan Davis), and Gabriel's former lieutenant, Paris (Pom Klementieff), who tells them where Gabriel is. Gabriel had tried to kill Paris as he was sure that she would betray them as Ethan had spared her life, and this turned her against Gabriel. Ethan convinces Degas and Paris that the Entity wants them divided and fighting each other, so that it can operate with impunity. The team attends a party where Gabriel is expected to attend. Grace meets Ethan at the party and tells him that Kittridge had ordered Grace to betray Ethan. In London, Gabriel's men capture Ethan and IMF agent Grace (Hayley Atwell). Gabriel forces Ethan to recover the "Podkova" module developed from the Rabbit's Foot in the sunken Russian submarine Sevastopol, which would give him control over the Entity, in exchange for Grace. Ethan surmises correctly that the Entity had cut Gabriel lose after he lost the Key. The submarine was undetectable to any known sonar. The Podkova was the secret to its invisibility, a counter acoustic algorithmic drive. In 2012, the Russians discovered a computer virus of unknown origin spreading through their Black Sea fleet. The mystery virus was intended to sabotage the Padkova and rendering the submarine detectable. The virus instead tricked the crew into sinking themselves. The Entity's source code was inside the Podkova, which was now sitting at the bottom of the ocean. The Podkova's housing was designed to self-destruct if tampered with. The only way to open it is with the Cruciform Key that Ethan has. Gabriel reveals that the Rabbit's foot was the malicious code for the Entity. If Ethan had not stolen the Rabbit's foot, there would be no Entity. If Ethen does not stop the Entity in 3 days, the Entity will initiate a global nuclear strike and end humanity as we know it. Ethan and Grace escape, but Gabriel gets away. Contacting the Entity, which was in a digital virtual reality box stored in Gabriel's lair, Ethan is shown visions of a nuclear apocalypse. The Entity says Luther will die and demands access to a digital bunker in South Africa to survive. The Entity says that it offers hope for the future and the few humans who survive would emerge stronger. If Ethan does not help the Entity to survive, the world still comes to and end in 3 days. Ethan tasks his team with getting the Sevastopol's coordinates and retrieving him after the dive. He races to save Luther, but Gabriel steals the Poison Pill and traps Luther with a timed nuclear bomb. Luther sacrifices himself and removes one detonator to convert it from a nuclear explosion to a conventional explosion to minimize the blast. Gabriel needed Ethan to be alive and Luther dead as only Luther could create the Poison Pill. Ethan is brought to Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center. Briggs believed that Ethan framed his father Jim Phelps (Jon Voight) as a traitor in Prague. With three days until the Entity takes over the remaining nuclear weapons control facilities and launches nuclear Armageddon, Ethan convinces Sloane to let him locate the Sevastopol, against CIA Director Eugene Kittridge's (Henry Czerny) objections. Sloane says that the nations who have control over their arsenals including US and Russia are already contemplating a preemptive strike before they lose control of it. As such, all treaty alliances are null and void. Grace, Benji, Paris, and Degas travel to St. Matthew Island in the Bering Sea, home to a Cold War era naval sonar array that detected the Sevastopol's sinking in 2012 without knowing the significance of the event. They meet former CIA analyst William Donloe (Rolf Saxon), who was exiled to the island after Ethan's 1996 break-in at CIA headquarters. The Russian Special Forces led by Captain Koltsov (Pasha D. Lychnikoff) also reach the Island for the coordinates. Donloe explains that the system was floppy disk based in 2012, before it was upgraded. The coordinates are in the disks, but he does not have a reader. Grace realizes that the Russians have a 2nd Key through which they plan to extract the Entity's source code from the Podkova. Captured by Russian special forces also seeking the coordinates, Grace and Donloe's wife Tapeesa (Lucy Tulugarjuk) escape by dog sled, and the others fight off the soldiers. Donloe coincidentally memorized the Sevastopol's coordinates and he transmits the coordinates to Ethan. Ethan joins the aircraft carrier USS George H. W. Bush in the North Pacific Ocean and later boards the submarine USS Ohio. The captain of the submarine Captain Jack Bledsoe (Tramell Tillman) informs Ethan that the Bering Sea is teeming with Russian submarines, and any mission in that area would be suicidal. Ethan orders Bledsoe to take the Ohio into the Bering Sea and come to periscope death to receive the coordinates. After receiving the coordinates and barely surviving a doomsday assassin named Hagar (Tomas Paredes) who had infiltrated the Ohio, Ethan uses an experimental diving suit to reach the Sevastopol and retrieves the Podkova as the wreck slides down the continental shelf. Ethan had a VHF transmitter on his body that allowed his team to track his exact location under the ice. Narrowly escaping without his diving suit (as the only exit was through a torpedo tube and it was too small for him to fit in with his suit), Ethan is revived from decompression sickness by Grace using a portable decompression chamber. Reunited with his team, Ethan plans to plug the Poison Pill into the Podkova, fooling the Entity into entering a physical optical 5D drive, built by Luther, instead of the bunker mainframe in South Africa. Benji explains that as soon as the Entity believes that it has entered the mainframe, it will launch the nuclear attack. Remove the drive too soon, and the Entity will not be completely removed and remove too late and it will launch the attack. The gap is 100 milliseconds. At the bunker, Gabriel ambushes the team with a timed nuclear device, demanding the Podkova. Gabriel believes that if he destroys the underground mainframe, the Entity would not launch as that would mean that the Entity would have to kill itself to destroy the world. Kittridge interrupts, seeking control of the Entity. During the gunfight, the bomb activates and Benji is shot. Gabriel flees with the Poison Pill, pursued by Ethan with the Podkova. Donloe, Tapeesa, and Degas defuse the bomb. Paris, Grace, and Benji prepare the mainframe to trap the Entity. Sloane avoids a preemptive nuclear strike on nations who had lost control of their nuclear arsenal to the Entity (as that would prevent the Entity from using their arsenals after it safeguarded itself), but the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs (Nick Offerman) is fatally wounded protecting her from a doomsday assassin, allowing the Entity time to take full control of the world's nuclear arsenal. Ethan chases Gabriel in a biplane, climbs onto his plane, breaks Gabriel's arm, and retrieves the Poison Pill. Gabriel gets himself killed after hitting his forehead on the plane's rudder after making a reckless attempt to escape. Ethan finds another parachute and inserts the Poison Pill into the Podkova mid-air, allowing Grace to trap the Entity just before nuclear launch. Ethan listens to a farewell message from Luther in the Poison Pill, which self-destructs afterwards. He gives the destroyed Podkova to Kittridge, and Briggs, revealed to be the son of Jim Phelps, makes amends with Ethan for exposing his father as a traitor. Reuniting in London, Grace gives Ethan the drive with the Entity and the IMF team part ways.
