Dusk for a Hitman
On the occasion of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as part of the Cultural Olympiad, the Philharmonie de Paris and Josette Baïz's Groupe Grenade have joined forces to create an ambitious show titled La Vie fantastique. This project, which combines artistic and cultural practices, brings together on stage 200 musicians, around forty young dancers, and several actors through scripted works. The result of a collaboration between the Démos team and choreographer Josette Baïz, this show celebrates the values common to both arts and sports: excellence, inclusion, cultural diversity, and universalism. It will feature a repertoire that includes classical symphonic works, pieces from oral traditions, and a contemporary creation specifically composed for the event, linking music, story, and choreography. La Vie fantastique, directed by Sébastien Cotterot, unfolds in two distinct parts: Part One: This section opens with a creation by Laurent Elbaz, followed by the accompaniment of five teenage dancers by the Démos Marseille Orchestra, supported by the Conservatoire Pierre Barbizet. Part Two: This showcases 35 young dancers, including about twenty from the northern districts of Marseille, making their stage debut. They will be accompanied by a soloist from the Children's Choir of the Orchestre de Paris and 70 young musicians. Compositions by Alexandros Markeas serve as transitions between the different sections, with works by Thoinot Arbeau, Modest Mussorgsky, Edvard Grieg, Maurice Ravel, and Gustav Holst, blended with traditional music and dances (Gumboot, Tari Saman, Balkan brass band). The Philharmonie de Paris has formed a unique orchestra for the Cultural Olympiad, composed of young musicians from several ensembles: Démos Orchestras - Orchestre de Paris and Démos Philharmonie de Paris, Partner schools and conservatories: Orchestre National de Lille, Rouen Music School, Kreiz Breizh Music, Dance and Theater School, Huguette Dreyfus Conservatory of Mulhouse, Jacques Thibaud Conservatory of Bordeaux, Youth orchestra El Camino from Pau, a long-time partner of Démos, International ensembles: Superar Austria and the Simfukai Youth Symphony Orchestra of Lithuania, former members of the Démos Europe Orchestra. About fifteen musicians from the French Youth Orchestra are also joining this project, taking on a mentoring role for the young Démos members aged 12 to 18. Throughout the 2023-24 season, they will lead some rehearsals, providing an experience of transmission and sharing of their passion for orchestral music and performance. Rehearsals, led by Anna Sulkowska-Migon, winner of the first prize at the La Maestra competition in 2022, began in July 2023 and continue until February 2024. Beatriz Fernández Aucejo, winner of the third prize in the same competition, conducts the orchestra for the performances. La Vie fantastique is a co-production of the Philharmonie de Paris and Groupe et Compagnie Grenade, with exceptional support from Paris 2024, the Ministry of Culture, the Seine-Saint-Denis Prefecture, the Île-de-France and Southern regions, the City of Paris, the City of Marseille, and various social organizations. The performance is also part of the inclusive Relax program, facilitating access for people with sensory and intellectual disabilities, allowing everyone to fully experience the musical event. The film La Vie fantastique undoubtedly stands as one of the highlights of the Cultural Olympiad of the Paris 2024 Games.
