Romy Mathis (Nicole Kidman), the CEO of a robotic process automation company in New York City, is dissatisfied with her sex life with her husband, Jacob (Antonio Banderas), who is a theater director. They have 2 daughters Isabel (Esther McGregor) and Nora (Vaughan Reilly). Jacob has no clue that his performance in bed is so dissatisfying for Romy as she fakes her orgasms to him. After sex, Romy goes into a different room and masturbates herself to porn to get some sense of fulfillment. Romy has to bite herself really hard so as not to scream out in pleasure. Later, she even tells Jacob that while having sex with him, she would like to watch porn. Jacob is ambivalent about the request. Romy then covers her face, so she doesn't have to see Jacob, but that doesn't work either as Jacob says that it makes him feel like a criminal. Romy claims to have been named by a guru and says that she grew up in and around cults and communes. She is very conscious about her looks and takes regular Botox injections and other anti-aging therapies such as sitting in an ice-cold chamber to reduce body wrinkles. Romy graduated from Yale and was selected by an investment firm after a grueling selection process. She could not solve the case study but was bold and aggressive, so she got hired. She believes that the firm was looking for certain personality types. Five years later, she started her own company. Romy's daughter Isabel is a lesbian and is exploring her sexuality with multiple partners. She has a girlfriend but frequently cheats on her with other girls. While on the way to work one day, she is almost mauled by a dog until a young man stops and calms it down. That young man, Samuel (Harris Dickinson) turns out to be an intern at Romy's company and picks Romy as his "mentor" through the company's mentoring program. Romy says that she does not have time to be a mentor, but Samuel is persistent. He says that Romy likes to be told what to do. Romy tries hard to be away from Samuel, but she is also attracted to him in a strange way. At an office party, Samuel orders milk for Romy which Romy ends up drinking while Samuel was away from the table but looking straight at it. Samuel propositions Romy during a private meeting. She objects, then gives in and kisses him. Samuel then leaves a key to his hotel room on Romy's desk and Romy ends up going there. Initially conflicted about the incident, the two later meet at a hotel. Romy expresses concern that she may be taking advantage of Samuel due to their power difference, but Samuel explains to her that he is the one with the power, as he could get her fired "with one phone call". Romy comes to an intense orgasm at the hotel in a dominance and submission dynamic with Samuel, the dominant partner. Samuel makes Romy act like a dog to take a treat from his hands. He makes her get on all fours and obey all his commands. Romy like doing what Samuel tells her to do. Romy sobs with deep conflict about her enjoyment of this experience after the orgasm. The two continue to meet at multiple rendezvous, their sexual affair gaining considerable intensity. Samuel continues to push boundaries. In one instance, he appears at Romy and Jacob's country home, ingratiating himself with the entire family under the pretense of returning Romy's laptop, which she left at the office. Feeling disrespected, Romy lashes out at Samuel, telling him that her family is everything to her and to never show up at her home again. Romy says that she cannot continue to see Samuel outside of work, which upsets Samuel. The two argue and Samuel says that he will request a transfer to a different department, which Romy objects to as she fears that it will only stir questions about her role in his transfer request. Unable to handle the stress, Romy rudely pushes Jacob away when he tries to initiate sex with her. Romy tells her husband that she is dissatisfied with their sex life and has never experienced an orgasm with him. Desperate, Romy meets with Samuel to convince him to continue their affair, but only after she confirms her submission to Samuel. Soon afterward, Samuel appears uninvited at her house again for her daughter's birthday party. He attends with Esme (Sophie Wilde), Romy's executive assistant, who he is dating. Esme informs Romy that she knows about her affair with Samuel. She tells Romy to end the affair, as she is one of the few women in the company in such a high position of power and needs to remain a role model for other women to look up to and respect. Romy later confesses the affair to Jacob but describing it as a stranger and a one-night stand. She desperately reaches out to Jacob, expressing her intense sexual needs, but Jacob is more upset about the affair. Jacob walks into their country house sometime later to find Romy and Samuel together. He confronts Samuel in a fistfight, but then suffers a panic attack, with Samuel coming to his aid before abruptly leaving. After being encouraged by her teenage daughter, Isabel, Romy and Jacob decide to rekindle their marriage, and sex life. A board member Sebastian Missel (Victor Slezak) informs Romy that Samuel has taken a new job in Japan. He asks if she had anything to do with Samuel leaving, seemingly implying that he knows about the affair, and invites her to his house when he is alone. Disgusted, Romy firmly states that she is unafraid of him and tells him to leave her office. Romy and Jacob are at home, having restarted their relationship. Together, they reenact the type of rough sex that Samuel introduced to Romy. But she is only able to orgasm by imagining Samuel playing with the dog in the hotel room that both Romy and Samuel shared earlier in the film.
