Evelyn, an ordinary housewife, visits a nursing home and befriends the old lady Ninny. Together, they bond over stories from the past about two intrepid women of Whistle Stop Cafe. Evelyn Couch is having trouble in her marriage, and no one seems to take her seriously. While visiting relatives at a nursing home, she meets Ninny Threadgoode, an outgoing old woman, who tells her the story of Idgie Threadgoode, a young woman in 1920s Alabama. Mary Stuart Masterson is Imogene Louise (Idgie) Threadgoode, the local tomboy who swears, smokes, drinks, gambles and never goes to church. Mary-Louise Parker is strait-laced Ruth Jamison, a preacher's daughter and only child in charge of the BYO activities and the young people at the church and Idgie herself. Jessica Tandy is Virginia (Ninny) Threadgoode, Idgie's sister-in-law. Idgie and Ruth lived back in the 1920s and 1930s in Whistle Stop, Alabama.
