The first "Gärdetfesten" was held between 12 and 14 June 1970, inspired by the Monterey Pop Festival and the Woodstock Festival as a cultural political manifestation. The festival was organized without applying for a permit. However, they first wanted to organize the party with a permit at Skeppsholmen, but because the municipality required SEK 50,000 as a deposit, a sum of money the organizers did not have, the party was moved to a big green field galled Gärdet. —Dramatisk Institutet
