August, a troubled young orphan, finds an abandoned ostrich egg and raises a giant, bird-brained best friend. When his ostrich is taken away, August risks everything to get him back. August, a recently orphaned city kid, is dumped on a remote farm in South Africa to be cared for by distant relatives. Having been "handed off" to a half-dozen prior foster parents, August is guarded and withdrawn. Discovering a large, abandoned egg gives the troubled boy a newfound sense of purpose. The hatched egg soon grows into Koobus, a towering, 350-pound ostrich with a big heart, small brain, and a penchant for dancing and mayhem. Boy and bird become inseparable. At school, where August is already struggling to adapt, Koobus shows up and defends him against a pack of school bullies. When the bullies falsely claim injury, August is forced by court order to give up his best and only friend. Worse still, the confused bird is sent away to a farm that raises ostriches for food. With the moral support of his two defiant parents, Thabo and Emmie, August steals his way into the ostrich compound and frees Koobus. On a sudden impulse, he releases all the captive birds. He leads his flock on a riotous ostrich stampede through the nearest town, hoping to set the birds forever free. In so doing, August becomes known the world over as "Bird Boy."
