Jack (William Lodder) and his single mother Christie (Frances O'Connor) move into a small town in Western Australia. Jack relieves his painful memory as he lost his father Hooper (Adam T Perkin) from cancer. Jack had fond memories of his time with his father, who was a racer himself. Jack plays racing video games at night, where Hooper was the top score, and Jack tries to beat his time. The house that Christie purchased over the internet turns out to be a dump and requires a lot of manual effort to bring it back into shape. Jack later helps his mom with loading things into her new business shop. She later tells him to go to a for a party happening at a go kart racetrack. Christie says that Jack knows nobody in town, and these are the kids that he will going school to, so he might as well take some time to get to know them and make friends with them. Jack develops an interest, love and passion for the sport of go karts when he attends a birthday party of his new friend, Mandy (Anastasia Bampos), at a local go-kart track. Jack also discovers that he is really good in that sport. In his first ever try, he almost beats the current state champion Dean (Cooper Van Grootel). Jack was driving faster than Dean, but got impatient on the last lap, trying to overtake Dean and spun out instead. Patrick (Richard Roxburgh) owns the go kart track, and needs money to the place going, which comes from Dean's father Mike (Damian De Montemas). Mike wants Patrick to coach Dean prepare for the nationals. Patrick refuses as Dean is not talented enough. Mandy is Dean's sister. Mandy tells Jack that he spun out as he went on the outside of the track, where all the loose stones and rubber from the tires are swept during the race. When a kart drives over it, it is super slippery. Jack doesn't have money to train or race but is smitten by the racing bug. He makes a deal with Patrick to help around the track, in exchange for being allowed to race around Patrick's track in his go carts. Jack negotiates for 2 laps of the track for every hour he works. Patrick makes Jack water the entire track with a manual water sprayer, paint the garage with a brush attached to a helmet, wash the go carts with his feet. Very Mr. Miyagi, Australian style. Patrick still maintains that Jack is not ready to race yet. Jack wants to ride at the Regionals, but Patrick says that Jack still needs a lot of work, which doesn't still well with Jack. Barry (Dan Wyllie), the local police officer arrests Jack when he is doing doughnuts in the local car park, without a license. But he lets him off with a warning after he meets Christie. Meanwhile Mandy is a crack mechanic, but Mike ignores her suggestions on how Dean can go his carts go even faster. Mike's engineer has 20 years of experience, and Mike is not willing to sideline him for the ideas from his daughter. Mandy asks Mike to make her the chief engineer instead. Jack and his mate Colin (Darius Amarfio-Jefferson) find parts of a go-kart in Patrick's shed and bring it home. Jack recruits Mandy as the Chief engineer of his team, and she puts together the go-kart from the spare parts Jack found. Jack enters the regional with the go-kart that Mandy put together. With some fearless driving, Jack finishes 3rd and qualifies for the state championships. Jack begs Patrick to be his coach. Patrick reveals that the spraying strengthens his arms, the painting helps him handle the g forces to the neck, and the feet cleaning helps him work the pedals faster. Jack can see Christie is lonely and encourages Barry to ask her out on a date. He even coaches Barry, when he confides that he freezes up when talking to women. Jack starts training with Patrick but must learn to control his recklessness given his age and striving hard to win the Australian National Go Karts Championship by defeating the best drivers in Australia. Patrick teaches Jack how to balance between the steering wheel and the accelerator. He gets the support of his mentor Patrick and his best mates Colin. Patrick wants Jack to get Mandy to make the kart even faster for state championship. Mandy agrees and Jack takes her out on a date, as a thank you. However, he has to confront the obstacles to defeat the ruthless champion Dean who is his strongest competitor. Dean gets the support of his father Mike who owns a race team. Dean dismantles Jack's kart by breaking into Patrick's shed, just before the state championships. Mandy helps to put the kart together in 24 hours and even steals a brake disc from her dad's workshop to help Jack. At the states, Jack muscles into 2nd position, but gets impatient on the last lap, while trying to overtake Dean and ends up in the ditch, but he crosses the line 4th. Jack is devastated as only the top 3 qualify for the nationals. Mandy says that Jack puts himself over the team and breaks up with him. The driver who came 2nd was disqualified for an illegal carburetor. Jack has a chance to race at Nationals. Patrick says that when he raced, he made a mistake that killed his mate. He discourages Jack from participating at Nationals as he sees Jack as equally reckless and doesn't want him to make the same mistakes. Eventually Patrick comes over his own fears and agrees to Jack racing at the nationals. Mandy refuses to get involved. At the nationals, Jack delivers a heartfelt apology to Mandy, and she comes back on the team. She stands up to her dad and says that this is her Kart and her team. The race begins. with 2 laps to go, Jack is again behind Dean. But this time Jack is patient and drags Dean on the outside and cuts the inside corner to overtake him and wins the race. Jack and Mandy kiss.
