Milk War

Documentary

This film introduces us to a remarkable individual, Republican Congressman Paul Findley of Illinois (1961 to 1983). . Few have achieved so much and did so without rancor or concern for the political winds of the day. Some of Mr. Findley's legislative achievements include the War Powers Act, the Famine Relief Act and civil rights legislation against age discrimination. As a high school student, he took a stand against a minstrel show, a position he was soundly criticized for. When he entered Congress he was no less assertive. In his first term he tried to stop Federal funding of segregated parks in the south. He went on to be a strong advocate for civil rights. His leadership helped shaped our relations with Red China. And he quietly worked behind the scenes to halt the spread of nuclear weapons, including in South America. He was among the early critics of the Vietnam War and became a central figure to stop it. It was a pivotal chapter for him and the country. Late in his career he became embroiled in the Middle East conflict. His stand for Palestinian rights produced a thunderous political backlash. Defeat was around the corner. As one colleague said of Paul, "There are no more like him." Courage To Speak Out inspires and gives us an insider's view of politics that entertains and informs. The film is fifty-three minutes long and comes with closed captions and sub-titles. —Anonymous
