Morgan!
London artist Morgan Delt (David Warner) often daydreams about gorillas swinging freely through the jungle. He believes that if he were a gorilla that his life would be less complicated and more happier. Morgan loves his left-wing communist idealistic mother (Irene Handl), but she makes him guilty for having forsaking the revolution. Although Mrs. Delt likes Morgan's wife Leonie (Vanessa Redgrave), she considers him a class traitor for having married an upper-class woman. But it all soon doesn't matter as Leonie divorces Morgan because he is hopelessly immature and frequently withdraws from reality. Morgan still loves Leonie deeply and hopes to win her back before she decides to get married to stuffy art dealer Charles Napier (Robert Stevens). Morgan tells Leonie that he is seeing a psychiatrist for his mental issues. However, Morgan tells his mother that he fears that he'll one day be taken away in a straight-jacket to the local lunatic asylum. Leonie becomes upset that Morgan will not leave her alone and he keeps sneaking into her house (once their house) and playing pranks on her. She still loves him, but gets a court injunction to keep him away from her. Morgan then goes to Charles' art gallery and threatens him with a gun. Charles doesn't take Morgan seriously, but is surprised when it has bullets. Charles tosses him out. Although Morgan doesn't know how to drive a car and has never had a driving license, he sleeps in his and Leonie's car parked outside Leonie's house. Leonie is happy to see Morgan, although part of her will wants him out of her life entirely. Morgan tells her she should have children by him rather then let Charles Napier babies grow inside her. When they were married, Leonie refused to have children with Morgan. Leonie and Morgan sleep together. The next morning, Morgan proposes they get re-married, but she refuses. Just then his car which is considers his "world of sanity" is towed away. Getting more desperate, Morgan tries to ruin Leonie and Charles's love life by putting an audio tape recording of an explosion under her bed. Then he puts a real explosive there. When Leonie's mother Mrs. Henderson (Nan Munro), who detests Morgan, sits on the bed, she is terrified but unhurt by the blast. Wally the Gorilla (Arthur Mullard), Morgan's mother's wrestling friend, knocks out Charles, and he and Morgan kidnap Leonie. They go to a secluded lake house in Belgium. Leonie is angry and will not speak to Morgan. But when she sees how frightened he is, she makes love to him. He tells her: "Nothing in this world seems to live up to my best fantasies except you." Charles then drives up to the lake. Morgan is arrested, taken back to England and put on trial. Based on Leonie's testimony, the judge sends Morgan to prison for defying the injunction. Morgan is released several months later on the day that Leonie marries Charles. Wearing a gorilla costume, Morgan crashes Leonie and Charles wedding party. But his costume catches on fire and he rides a bike into the Thames. Afterword, he lies in a a garbage heap and has a nervous breakdown. He imagines he is killed by a Russian army firing squad that includes Leonie, Charles and his mother. Sometime later, a very pregnant Leonie visits Morgan who has been committed to an insane asylum. He thanks Leonie for coming to visit him and asks if the baby is his. She only smiles with the implication that it is his. Morgan touches Leonie's pregnant belly and smiles slyly, and then turns back to his garden, which he has formed in the shape of a communist hammer and sickle slogan.
