Naples Never Dies... It Shoots!
Tumbleweed is the story of a hard-on-his-luck construction worker and single father, MANNY SANDOVAL. He is forced to make difficult decisions when he loses his health-care benefits. He need's health insurance to treat his 8 year old daughter Sarah, who is battling cancer. As Sarah's health declines, Manny takes desperate measures. He leaves Sarah and her younger sister, Ornella in the care of his mother, and becomes involved in a drug smuggling ring his friend presented as a way to make fast, serious cash. What he finds across the Mexican border -- between the mariachis and margarita's in the sun -- is beyond his comprehension when a simple drug pick-up for cash turns foul and quite unexpected and dangerously deadly. This entangled story includes a struggling real estate agent, Daniel, and his nurse wife, Kate. Dealing with corruption, roadside police, and the drug cartel, this film speaks to the issues of weak border patrol, intercontinental smuggling, rising health care costs, lack of job security, fraudulence, organized crime, attempted rape, and blackmail. As one man attempts to frame another, we see how police vice and corruption work hand-in-foot. Daniel and Kate are beach-bound American tourists - an average couple taking a romantic trip away to Mexico. When they cross paths with Manny, none of them realize that Kate is actually a nurse who has taken care of his daughter. Their initial meeting with him south of the border is near the beach, starting playfully and fun socially at a Mexican party, it soon turns wrongly awry, dangerous, and ending Kate being kidnapped, and eventually deadly for others. We also meet Erik Rydell, a corrupt cop, who is counting the days until he retires. He too is lured in to a life he didn't know existed when he has a opportunity to make quick cash, which would enable him to escape the live he leads, and hates, in the desert. With the Russian mafia and its organized crime circuit fueling these drug deals and on their coattails, there is an interwoven blend of cultural elements that make this international film both compelling and sensitive, and a very dramatic action story. In the end, the daughter's health steadily improves, but not without family anguish & fear, leading to a final inner victory for Manny.
