Yash Khurana (Rishi Kapoor) is the chief executive and owner of Tejpal Industries, a hugely successful auto firm. Yash's father had built the business from a small cycle repair shop and handed it over to his elder son Kuldeep. When Kuldeep passed away in his youth, the business was managed by Yash, who took it to new heights. Yash is stepping down as CEO, in order to enjoy retirement. He gave the responsibility and authority to run the family business to his son, Rajiv (Vikas Bhalla), a well-trained and highly educated executive, but insecure, who feels the pressure of trying to fill his father's shoes in running the family business. Parul (Deepshika) is Rajiv's wife. When Yash is walking his dogs and crossing at a busy intersection, a car almost hits him. He is irate, calls the police and berates the woman driver Toshi and her passenger Sheetal (Dimple Kapadia). As Toshi did not have a driving license, Sheetal switches places with her. Sheetal while laughing points out to the policeman that it is against the law to walk two dogs at the same time. When they get home, Yash and Sheetal each describe the day's main event to their families. Sheetal has daughters Riya and Anu. Little do they realize that their paths will cross again at a grocery store. Yash follows Sheetal and says that their bags got exchanged at the storage counter of the grocery store. They again meet at a local park when Yash was running his dogs. Sheetal is afraid of dogs and Yash helps her get familiar with his dogs and she befriends them. Yash and Sheetal become friends. They share more in common than either of them realizes - each lost a spouse and is totally devoted to their families, putting them first in their lives and made great sacrifices to keep the families together. Sheetal is planning the marriage of her oldest daughter Riya (Soha Ali Khan) to Sanju (Sammir Dattani), the son of a wealthy upper-class family. Sanju's mother, Madhu (Kishori Shahane) does not support his marriage and feels he is marrying beneath his social class. Madhu is married to Raj (Harish Patel), Sanju's father. Madhu says that Sheetal's family have a shipping agency business, but are not industrialists like them. Madhu is creating delays, hoping to break up their plans, but Sanju defy his mother's authority and states he will elope with Riya if his family puts up obstacles. Sanju says that he and Riya have been together since the 2nd grade, and he is not going to abandon her now. Toshi Arya (Farida Jalal) is Sheetal's sister-in-law and has a daughter Dolly (Delnaaz Paul). One day, Yash injures his ankle while jogging in the park. Sheetal was also there, and she drives Yash to his home in his car. This is the first time Sheetal meets Yash's family. One day at a beach, Yash and Sheetal save a young couple from being harassed by police constables. ACP Singh was also at the beach, and he admonishes his constables. ACP Singh mistakes Yash and Sheetal for being husband and wife, and they do not correct him. Sheetal and Yash meet again regularly and feel they are in love. They are very different, as Sheetal loves Paani Puri, while Yash believes that street food is unhygienic. Sheetal loves chilies and Yash hates it. Yash smokes a cigar, while Sheetal hates smokers. They go out on a date and are seen dancing and dining at a Moroccan restaurant. A friend of Madhu reports this to her and she uses it as yet another excuse to delay the date for the marriage of her son. Madhu confronts Sheetal when she comes to meet and indicates that Sheetal's actions will bring disrepute to both families. While Sheetal was leaving, ACP Singh arrives and tells Madhu that Sheetal is married to Yash. This flames the anger even further. Madhu informs Sanju about her decision and the news reaches Sheetal's family. First the kids of Sheetal find out the truth and then they travel to Yash's house and tell his kids. The children of both Sheetal and Yash are irate over their relationship and suspect it may be a secret love affair of a long time carried on behind their backs. Riya says that Sheetal knew what she was doing was wrong and which is why she did not inform her family, except Toshi. Riya blames Sheetal for breaking her marriage with Sanju. Sanju says that Sheetal has the right to meet whoever she wants and that ACP Singh was mistaken, which is not Sheetal's fault. Toshi tries to get the kids together to get them to understand that Yash and Sheetal are only good friends. But the kids are intent on blaming their parents for bringing disrespect to their families. Sanju advises Yash and Sheetal to get married, but this angers Riya. Toshi, advises Yash and Sheetal to run away and travel together. She argues that only when they go will their kids think about what they are missing in form of their parents. Yash and Sheetal meet at their friend's resort and get to know each other a lot better. Yash's kids figure out that their mom was earlier married to Yash's elder brother. Yash loved a girl named Sneha. When Rajiv was born, his dad died in an accident. 3 months later Yash sacrificed his own love and married his Bhabhi to protect his family. Rajiv is devastated to understand that Yash sacrificed his whole life for the sake of his elder brother's son. He never even had a child of his own for this reason. After a while, their children (led and organized by Sanju) are able to trace them, but Yash declares they want to marry each other, and everyone accepts it. Sanju ignores his mother and marries Riya. In the wedding he meets Kylie Milligan (Emma Bunton), an international movie star, hired by his mother to liven up the party, and shows interest in her, starting new confusions in his married life.
