The Bet
A man named Will (Mathew Newton), a young stockbroker working in Sydney, makes a bet with his wealthy friend Angus (Aden Young) to prove himself and to prove who can make the most money with 50 grand in 90 days for a prize of $100,000. Angus also promises to get Will a membership at the Royal Sydney club, in case he wins. Angus is considered to be a jerk and the whole office is rooting for Will to show him his place. But by day 9, Will had nothing. Will is scouring the news papers and the other information channels, trying to find an investment opportunity, but ends up with nothing substantial. He is neck deep trying to find a play and is neglecting his clients in the process. He is so distracted that he sells a wrong quantity of shares for a client, causing a substantial loss ($30K) to the said client (which is recovered from Will's paycheck), who yells at Will. Their mutual friend Benno (Tim Richards) (Will's boss, who knows that Will is losing the bet to Angus) tells to invest in a pharmaceutical company called Brex. Brex is the target of an acquisition bid, and the stock prices are on an upswing. Benno says that Australia has had 4 insider trading convictions in its history and that Will has to play smarter, if he plans to beat Angus. Day 17, and Will still does not have a play in the market. Angus calls Will and indicates that he is doing well with his portfolio. At a golf game with Benno and Will, Angus suggests that Will can win a hole, he will have the choice to call off the bet or double it. Will wins and opts to double the bet payoff to $200,000. In desperation Will agrees to bend for a bit for insider trading. His ego-fueled obsession on the betting game forces him to measure the cost of his ambition against the true value of love. Prices of Brex stock goes from $5 to $9.5. Yet the acquisition has not yet been announced by day 27. Will finds out through Benno that his girlfriend Tory (Sibylla Budd) is working at Century Tech, the firm that is in the race to acquire Brex. Tory and Angus used to date earlier, but now Tory is with Will. In fact, Tory and Will stay in a rented apartment that belongs to Angus, and he allows Tory to stay there at a lower than market rent, else they would not be able to afford it. Will's father wants to start a business venture with his $40K savings and a loan from the bank, but Will is livid that his own father would not consider investing with him. Will says that by investing, his father would not even have to go to a bank for the loan. Day 37, The Fed increases rates by 0.5% to tame record high oil prices. This has an impact on the Australian stock markets. Day 40, Brex is back down to $5/share. Day 43 and Will figures out that Brex is working on a cure for Type 2 diabetes (by going through a paper that his girlfriend Tory is researching). He advises all his clients to buy more of Brex. He also gives an anonymous tip to the Sydney Morning Herald that Brex is working on a cure for Type 2 diabetes. Day 53, Brex reaches $16.25/share. His father also invests money with Will. His dad was saving the money ($40K) for a business venture, but Will had forced his dad to invest the money with him. Angus seems to be losing the bet. Plus, Benno is working on a deal with a ski-lodge, but Angus would not get on board and invest his client's money on it. This causes a lot of tension between Angus and Will. Angus suggests that Tory is helping Will with insider information on the deal between Brex and Century Tech. Will swears to Tory that he is not insider trading. Day 60, Brex reaches a high of $20.5 and starts dropping. Century Tech dumps Brex stock. Day 73, the news is public that Century Tech is not pursuing a merger with Brex anymore. It's a rout on the stock market. Stock prices hit low ($3/share) and his clients are devastated, including his dad. In a moment of madness, Will makes out with his assistant Trish (Alyssa McClelland) in the office, late at night, when everyone had gone home. Will finds a note at Tory's office and finds out a way he can make back his lost money. He learns that Century Tech is going to go ahead with the acquisition of Brex. Unfortunately, he doesn't find any investors. Will asks Trish, whom he has jilted earlier to transfer funds ($100K) from one of his clients illegally and he uses it to gain profit. Will puts back the money he transferred illegally but is arrested for fraud by officials. Tory who gets him out on bail, confronts his betting obsession, tells the Brex pharmaceutical company he was betting against was Agnus's family business and he controls it. Will makes the connection between Benno's advice and Agnus' bet. Will confronts Agnus and he says it's he who recommended Trish in their company through Benno and Benno was bribed handsomely to reel in Will. This was because Tory was Agnus' girlfriend first and he still pines over her. Agnus is beaten up by Will, but Agnus manages to pin down Will and asserts he will charge case against Will using Trish as a witness for fraud, market manipulation, insider trading etc. This would be enough to put Will in jail for a long time which will make Tory forget him. Betrayed and humiliated Will commits suicide. After Will's funeral Trish tells Tory about Agnus' role in Will's suicide.
