The Prey of the Wind
An early aviator crash lands in a remote European country where he falls in love with a beautiful woman. In the Balkans, Georges, a revolutionary, is released from prison due to a lack of evidence against him, but his wife, Helene, his sister-in-law, Countess Elisabeth, and the women's ailing mother remain in custody. After another prisoner claims that Georges was set free because he betrayed his comrades and her mother dies in their shared cell, Helene suffers a breakdown. Some time later, aviator Pierre Vignal sets off on a one-man mission to chart a new commercial air route over Europe. Forced by bad weather to attempt an emergency landing, the pilot crashes on the grounds of an isolated chateau inhabited by Elisabeth and Georges. They take in Vignal and have his injuries treated by Massaski, a doctor in their confidence. During his convalescence, Vignal develops an attachment to the Countess, which she appears to reciprocate. However, the budding romance is complicated by mysterious goings-on at the chateau and the surprise appearance of Helene, who begs Vignal to save her from Georges and Elisabeth, whom she accuses of plotting to murder her. —shana-carter
