The Silicant
In the wake of a domestic assault charge, Tristan's self isolation is interrupted by an otherworldly force that tries to invade his mind - and his house. Tristan comes home from work to his girlfriend, Naomi, and his dog, Winnie, with plans to propose. Naomi, on the premise of celebrating three months living together, begins plying Tristan with alcohol, then tries to get him to be sexually aggressive with her. When he refuses, she slams her head into their countertop and makes a mess of the house. As the police arrive, they see a drunk man and an injured woman, assume the most logical explanation, and haul Tristan to jail. Returning home to an empty house where Naomi has stolen all of his possessions (including the ring) and Winnie missing, Tristan falls into depression and cannot bring himself to leave his house. His brother, Jacob, and Jacob's husband, Andrew, make an effort to console him and bring him some basic supplies, but Jacob and Tristan butt heads when Jacob questions if Tristan is being honest about Naomi. Tristan, isolating himself for days in a sleeping bag, eventually chooses to harm himself, and in that moment hears a loud boom outside. Investigating, he hears strange noises and movement in his yard, and becomes convinced that some sort of malevolent entity is attempting to enter. Boarding up the windows to the house, Jacob returns to find Tristan's behavior worrying, and the two come to blows when Jacob pushes Tristan through the front door. Jacob leaves with a black eye, and Tristan, convinced of a need to defend the house against the threat, begins training hard to transform himself into something capable of taking on the monster, which he has dubbed a "Silicant". After an extended encounter with the Silicant attempting to enter the house, Tristan tries to flee and is cuffed by police, who were responding to a noise complaint at the house. Jacob and Andrew return to the house and agree to stay with Tristan, sending the police away. Choosing to trust and believe Tristan, the three create a plan, lure the creature into the house, and douse it in high proof alcohol, seemingly killing it. The three sleep in a huddle together that night. Hearing a scratching at the door, Tristan think that perhaps the monster has returned, only to discover Winnie, having found his way back home. As the four of them leave, Tristan looks at the house one last time, uncertain if the creature, or his paranoia, will return. —David McGuire
