Thimphu follows seven characters seeking validation and growth in changing ties. As their journeys unfold, their lives intertwine. revealing Thimphu as a raw, beautiful and chaotic microcosm of life and humanity. Aum Nangsi is a mistress of a married man, although she is taken care of financially, she yearns for an identity and a stronger emotional connection. She often shares her joys and pains with her beautician, Maya. A hardworking and focused beautician, Maya, supports her family through her salon, but starts to lose focus when she falls in love with an unemployed graduate and struggling musician, Gyaltshen. Gyaltshen, a charming guy is looking for his big break through and dreams of a "fast life" but when he starts to becomes close to Aum Nangsi and Maya at the same time, he must decide between his emotions and ambitions. Dechen a young dreamy transgender in Maya's salon is looking for her first love, and when a young man romances her, she gets scared that he might not accept her for who she really is. In front of the salon Aum Zam, a grandmother, sells thukpa(porridge) and vegetables, under the constant chase from the city inspectors and has daily interactions with other characters. She supports her alcoholic grandson, Tsagay a city garbage collector, while dreaming of traveling to Bodhgaya, Aum Zam has another grandson, Kinga. Kinga is an ambitious parking fee collector who works hard to support himself through high school with the hopes of supporting his family. As the garbage truck and Tsagay weave their way through Thimphu city, so do all the stories in the film, THIMPHU. Connected metaphorically by the garbage truck, the stories of all the characters weave in and out of each other, and each character must battle with their secrets and desires. Can they find the Buddha within themselves?
