Things We Do in the Shadow
November 2023 and the King's Speech announced plans to end leasehold for houses in England and Wales but left 4.5 million apartment owners unaffected and still worried. LEASEHOLD is the new 60-minute documentary which tells the story of the millions of leaseholders now trapped in their own homes, unable to sell or move apartment. The film examines the need for better rules to govern apartment management and construction in the UK. Since the Grenfell Tower disaster seven years ago, the British government has introduced legal changes which mean many homeowners are now unable to secure a mortgage on their property and face mounting new costs. The film is presented by Labour MP Barry Gardiner and visits residents across the UK from London to Manchester meeting those effected by years of uncertainty, building misery and increased bills. Filmed over the past three months this film contains interviews, archive and aerial footage together with experts, homeowners and lawmakers. It presents a shocking, moving story of failure to protect millions of apartment owners from potential emotional and financial ruin. The film is relevant to both homeowners and their families and friends. Almost everyone will know someone affected. From January 2024 it will play at venues around the UK. Copyright cleared video clips and images are available for free use by media outlets. These feature leaseholders and stories from across England and Wales. The resources can accompany interviews with Barry Gardiner MP or be used as part of general coverage in print, radio or TV and online.
