In 1970s, the organized mafia had a relatively free reign in the US. This was the height of organized crime in America, as the mafia was free to engage in all types of criminal activities, controlled the police, judges and even the politicians. La Cosa Nostra, meaning "our thing" in Italian, was the name given to the Italian-American Mafia, a criminal organization with roots in Sicily. It's a highly structured, hierarchical group that operates through families and engages in a wide range of criminal activities, including racketeering, extortion, drug trafficking, and violence. Vault tells a story about a group of small-time criminals in 1975 who attempt to pull off the biggest heist in American history: stealing over $30 million from the Mafia in the smallest state in the union, Rhode Island. This was the beginning of the end for the La Cosa Nostra. Deuce (Theo Rossi) & Chucky (Clive Standen) enter a small business shop in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1972 and rob it off all the cash. Deuce refuses to wear a mask to cover his face, but Chucky argues that security teams are already using CCTV cameras to monitor the buildings. Karyn (Samira Wiley) was working the cash till that day and is not happy that her day was interrupted by Deuce. Karyn is concerned that Deuce will prematurely shoot his gun, if he gets scared. She wants to know if the gun is loaded. Deuce like her attitude and spunk. Deuce wants Karyn to hand over her purse, but she refuses as she says that she only has enough money for her daily bus fare home. She says that if she hands over the bus fare, she is not in a position to walk back home due to her high heel shoes. Chucky accidentally fires the gun and ends up injuring the owner of the shop. That night Deuce picks up Karyn and brings her to his home to introduce her to his mother (Dorothy Lyman). They end up kissing at the end of the night. Karyn says that she wants to live in the part of town from where she can see the stars. Karyn warns Deuce that Chucky is jumpy and tells him to wear a mask at his next job. Deuce leaves an envelope full of cash in Karyn's purse. Both Deuce and Chucky are caught red-handed at their next heist, when their driver Tommy panics and bails. Tommy had heard the description of the getaway car on the police frequency and hence he panicked. Raymond Patriarca (Chazz Palminteri) is the head of the crime mafia in Rhode Island. Raymond is a notorious gangster and executioner who, although in jail, continues running his crime empire from inside his well-appointed jail cell. Raymond was incarcerated for conspiracy to commit murder. Gerry "The Frenchman" Ouimette (Don Johnson) had worked for Raymond for many years and wants Raymod to make him a "made man" and accept him into his crime family. Raymond refuses and adds that if Gerry continues to complain then he would also end up dead. Raymond indicates that since Gerry is French, he will never be accepted as part of an Italian family. In 1975, Deuce and Chucky are put in the same prison that co-incidentally hosted Raymond and Gerry. Karyn continues to be in touch with Deuce through letters. Deuce knows of Raymond and says that anyone who crosses him, ends up dead. Gerry notices them in a brawl and is impressed with their fighting abilities. Chucky is brutal during the fight and gives no chance to his opponent to come back once he has him on the ground. Gerry recruits Deuce and Chucky for his war against Raymond. When Deuce and Chucky get out, Gerry wants them to rob a fur shop, which is a front for the mob's safety deposit boxes. The way the system worked, there was no way to identify which deposit box belonged to whom. Gerry even assembles his crew for Deuce and Chucky to lead, which includes Buddy Providence (William Forsythe), Buddy Roxbury (Sean Ringgold) and Buddy Barrington (Eric Lutes). To protect identities, they call each other buddy and the place they are from. The robbery goes as planned and the crew makes away with $ 30 million of the mob's hidden money. After the heist, they turn most of it over to Ouimette to fence while they lie low and hope for the heat to dissipate. Deuce hides out in a rural motel with his girlfriend Karyn, growing increasingly anxious. 2 months later, it looks like Deuce and Chucky got away with it as they are living it up in Las Vegas. A few months later, the money has all but run out. Their colleagues have been picked out and killed one by one. Both Deuce and Chucky are in hiding. Deuce thinks that Gerry has gotten greedy and is eliminating the crew so that he doesn't have to pay them anything at all. They were promised 70K per person for 7 guys, and in exchange Gerry got $ 30 million. Chucky comes out to meet Deuce and initially wants to kill him. But Deuce guesses that Chucky is there to kill him and puts a gun on him instead. They have a tearful re-union and decide not to kill each other. Eventually it is Karyn who talks to the police and turns Deuce in. Detective Caretti (John Fiore) informs Deuce that Chucky was killed for disobeying a direct order and not killing Deuce. Deuce is heartbroken and spills the beans with a full confession. Thats when Caretti reveals that Chucky is alive and in custody. Chucky was jailed for 10 years for the robbery. Deuce was let go since he cooperated. Chucky and Deuce were never friends again. None of the money was ever recovered. Raymond eventually got out of prison and died in 1984 a free man. Gerry was arrested for his role in the heist and served 10 years. Turns out it was Raymond who had ordered Gerry to steal the deposit boxes as he wanted to own the entire town.
