Walk Away Renee
Linda Sinclair (Julianne Moore) is a 45-year-old high school English teacher in the small town of Kingston, Pennsylvania. Linda was born in the same town. She is passionate about her subject and popular with her students but lives alone in a simple existence. Linda was an avid book reader right from when she was a child. Her ideas of romance and love were formed from reading these books. Cursed with a hopelessly romantic soul, she lived in a world of men unable to match her impossible standards. Linda's dating life was a mess made up of one loser after another which made her give up on men for good and she had no prospects of marriage in the near future. Linda longed for a sensitive and thoughtful man. When her former star pupil Jason Sherwood (Michael Angarano) returns after graduating from NYU's play-writing program, crushed and insecure after failing to succeed. Jason had written a play, and he shares the script with Linda. Linda convinces him to produce his play at the school. Linda shares the play script with Carl Kapinas (Nathan Lane), the school drama teacher who flips for it and wants to produce this play in school. Carl was looking for something new as he was tasked with producing the same play for the school''s annual function year after year and was sick of it. Carl chooses Halle Anderson (Lily Collins) as the lead. Vice-Principal Phil Pelaski (Norbert Leo Butz) is opposed to the deviation from the normal school production. But Principal Trudie Slocum (Jessica Hecht) allows the play to be produced based on Linda's recommendation. Linda argues that producing Jason's play would inspire many students given that Jason is an alumnus of the school. Carl says that the play will double the normal ticket sales easily as the people are hungry for something new. Linda also agrees to fund the play in case it goes over budget as the play requires several special effects and new costumes to be made. Approval is given on an agreement that the dark ending of the play (which includes a teenage girl hanging herself and her father blowing his brains out with a gun) would be changed in being mindful of the young audience. Carl admits to Linda that he has no intention of changing the ending & that he agreed to it only to get permission of the Principal and the VP. Jason's overbearing father, Dr. Tom Sherwood (Greg Kinnear), pressures him to attend law school instead, which he finally seemingly relents to with no other prospects in sight. In a moment of intense vulnerability, Linda ends up having sex with Jason on her classroom desk, when she was trying to support him. Complications arise after Linda sleeps with Jason, which affects her and everyone around her including the play. Linda tells Jason that what happened between them can never happen again & Jason agrees. Linda finds out that Jason is hanging with Halle after school & is a tad jealous. Jason & Carl pursue perfection in the play, which is making it go over budget and Linda has to pay for it from her own pocket as per the promise she made to the principal. Soon she is out of pocket by $ 5000. To top it off, Carl cuts the ending as instructed by the principal and asks Linda to break the bad news to Jason. Linda tries to talk to Halle & warns her about letting herself being used by men for things other than her acting talent. But pretty soon she finds Halle making out with Jason. Jason & Linda fight accusing each other of cheating around, which is secretly filmed by another student on his iPhone. By the next day every student in school is against Linda. Linda goes to the principal & says that Halle is spreading vicious rumors about her because she caught Jason making out with Halle & warned her about it. As everybody gets to the theater, it emerges that Linda never told Jason about cutting the ending from the play (Carl throws her under the bus on this one) & then Halle produces the video showing Linda & Jason arguing about their romp in the classroom. Linda is completely discredited. She is fired on the spot & has an accident on her way back home. At the hospital, she is treated by Jason's father Dr Tom Sherwood. Linda breaks down in front of him & admits that she slept with Jason. Tom also tells Linda that he is not the drunken, abusive father that Jason makes him out to be. He also says that Jason's mother is not dead as he claims, she is re-married & lives in a different state. Carl is admitted to the hospital with stress & Jason refuses to take the play unless the original ending is restored, which the Principal refuses to accept. So, the Principal approaches Linda to take up the play. The play has sold $ 18000 in tickets and the school needs the money. However, the school heads require a new ending for the play as the current one is considered overly violent and they fear parents will be outraged by its dark themes of murder and suicide. The play actors, including Halle, refuse to cooperate with Linda and hate the new ending written by Carl before he collapsed. Linda approaches Jason to write a new ending. Jason insults Linda & absolutely refuses to cooperate. She manages to redo the ending which appeases the school and Jason (when he sees the play is a success). Carl, Jason & the entire team soak the limelight while Linda fades into the background. Jason moves on to write further plays as Linda eases back into teaching and regaining her reputation. Sometime later, Linda runs into Jason's father at her favorite bookshop. Catching up over coffee, both realize they'd totally misread each other previously. Grateful for all she has done for his son, and pleasantly surprised they have much more in common than previously thought, Tom invites Linda on a further proper date, and she, somewhat hesitantly, accepts.
