When Tomatoes Met Wagner
The humorous and uplifting story of two ingenious Greek cousins and five village women, who tackle the world market with their home grown tomatoes, premiered at the prestigious Berlin International Film Festival (February 2019), was nominated for the Prix-Europa Award and was the Greek entry to the 92nd Academy Awards (International Feature Film Category). Filmmaker Mariana Economou's documentary is set in the tiny village of Elias, amid the mountainous bound plains of Thessaly, central Greece. It follows the turn of events when Christos, a traditional farmer, turns his land to the organic cultivation of tomatoes to overcome the Greek financial crisis. In his cousin Alexandros' house, village women begin to pasteurize the tomato and hand-package it as tomato paste and meals. Soon, the little jars find their place on the shelves of organic stores across the world. The film is a story about an ordinary rural community, where things start to happen in an extraordinary way. After centuries of introversion, the tomato stirs up life in the village and its thirty three elderly inhabitants must respond. On top of this, Alexandros plays Wagner in the tomato fields to help them grow, uses stories to market the products and convinces people from all over the world to visit Elias. With humor and poetry, When Tomatoes Met Wagner speaks to us about the power of human relationships and the importance of reinventing oneself during difficult times. Since its premiere at the Berlinale, the documentary has also screened at Sydney International Film Festival, Thessaloniki IFF (Fipresci Critics Award), Visions du Reel (pre-opening film), DOK.fest Munchen, CineDOC Tbilisi, DocsBarcelona Spain, Jean Rouch, DocAviv Festival Israel, Montreal Cinéma sous les Etoiles, Lemesos Int Doc. Festival and Sarajevo Film Festival. It was awarded by the Greek Film Academy as best documentary, it was Greece's selection for the Oscars in the foreign film category and was selected for the Prix Europa 2020. It has received 17 festival awards.
