The magical old Puppeteer journeys the heartland, putting on marionette shows for townspeople, encountering lovers, and a wild Hitchhiker, while elsewhere his estranged Son crys for self-destruction or a return to being made of wood. The puppeteer travels from town to town, sharing Czech folk stories and bringing his hand-carved marionettes to life. He's not a young man anymore, and it's not easy being the caretaker of so many ancient wooden things. But he has other things to worry about, like his son, who is terribly sad, for he too was once a performer, until the puppeteer cursed him with the worst fate of all - existence.
